Argentina Congressional Elections

After weeks of the sound of banging drums outside of my apartment, the streets have added a new twist (aside from the 10-15 occasions throughout the day where the fire station down the street has the urge to joy ride with blaring sirens down Corrientes) This is what my street looks like leading up to the Congressional Elections (Sunday) – littered with slips of paper in support of the “Partido Obrero” candidate. Apparently, my barrio (Villa Crespo) is all about this party – and after a year of living here, I can see it.

Judging by the slips of paper in the street my first guess would be “Paro” (strike) but actually it was for pub of the guy below. *Check out that load in the pick-up – impressive*

Here’s the man. Nice motto by the way: “Make the Capitalists pay for the Crisis!” – That’s sure to stir the people of Villa Crespo.

Madres de Plaza de Mayo

The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo are a human rights organization that formed after the fall dictatorship rule that lasted from 1976-1983. The group is composed of the mothers who have lost their children who have “disappeared” (the term they use) by means of the government. Those deemed resistant or a threat to the government were taken away (many snatched unexpectedly, like at the University of Buenos Aires where I took class last semester and nearly 100 students were ‘disappeared’). Unable to get answers on their missing children, mothers took to Plaza de Mayo and without the use of violence (the military was forced to hold back since the women never caused violence) , drew attention to their cause around the world. They still circle the ‘May Pyramid” in front of the Casa Rosada every Thursday.

Unfortunately I was late getting there but i caught these two ‘mothers’. The one in brown told us about her son – a photo of him is pinned to her coat.

Since I was late and the ‘walk’ around the May Pyramid ended early, here are some other shots I took of people out and about… It was a nice day to be at the plaza.

La Catedral – Plaza de Mayo

This is the entrance of ‘La Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires‘, finished in 1823 after years of renovations. Actually, additions were made – the 12 columns – throughout the 19th century but most of what you see was completed in 1823.

Here’s what the inside looks like…
